5 Reasons I Love Being a Fangirl

The life of a Fangirl can be crazy, expensive and very much time- consuming, but 95% of the time, it’s so worth it. Whether it be for your favourite artist on tour, or your favourite actor starring in a blockbuster film, the feelings are the same. I have been a “Fan girl” for most of my life starting back in the late 90’s with my love for both NSYNC* and Backstreet Boys. (No, I cannot choose just one) Since then, it’s gradually taken over my life. As they say, “I didn’t choose the Fangirl life, the Fangirl life chose me!”

As a Fangirl, I feel like I’m a part of something

Growing up, I never really felt like I fit it in anywhere. Even when I was in High School and was part of Drama club, I didn’t really know if I belonged there. But in that room, full of thousands of strangers, or in a theater full of people, I feel like I’m a part of something. Harry said in the Howard Stern interview this year “I’ve just never been in an atmosphere like that. It just feels so safe. It’s like a family full of strangers.” That’s exactly what it feels like. He goes on to say in that same interview, “It’s kind of an escape.” No matter how old you are, it can be hard to find your place in this world, and when you’re in a room full of people who share the same interests as you, it makes you feel like you finally belong somewhere.

As a Fangirl, you make friends from all over the world

One of my favourite things about going to concerts in general is that you can meet so many great people either in line or whilst in the venue waiting for the show to start. In the film, One Direction: This Is Us, Liam Payne talked about the fans and how by coming to the shows, fans have become friends with each other. There’s nothing better than finding people who you have something in common with. I met a couple of wonderful people over the years who have now become friends and it was all because of the one thing we all had in common. It’s not just going to shows, social media is another way fans have become friends.

As a Fangirl, I love how interactive fanbases can be

From One Direction to Louis Tomlinson people in every fan base try to show how much they appreciate their favourite artist by organising projects including these ones here. When the fans of

One Direction put together the “We Are 1D Family” project that was featured in the concert film Where We Are Tour: Live from San Siro,, the guys could definitely feel the love from the fans. But it’s not just fan projects. When singles or albums drop, us as fans want to get them to the Number #1 spot and so update accounts on Twitter post daily with stats of singles/albums and ways that you can play them in order to maximise streams.As of recently with Louis Tomlinson’s film All of these Voices being announced, fans took it upon themselves to get the word out by paying for a billboard in Times Square in New York City to help promote the movie. I have never seen so much dedication.

As a Fangirl I love the influences artists can have

Grammys 2021 proved how much an artist can influence a fan base. All it took was Harry Styles wearing a green furry boa to spark a trend. From that day the sales of boas skyrocketed. When Love on Tour 2021 started September of that same year it seemed like everyone was wearing a boa in some way. Harry even gifted the fans boas at the final residency show at Madison Square Garden.

As a Fangirl it can change your career path

For most of my life I wanted to be a writer and write books. I even took English and writing courses in college. Throughout the last several years of being on social media, I am now working on getting my foot in the door in the entertainment industry. Fans have showed that the traditional college route is not what you need to do in order to be successful. From running successful update accounts on Twitter to becoming a concert photographer to working at major record labels, I think it’s safe to say that Fanbases are taking over.

As I said before, whether it’s waiting in line for hours to see your favourite band to scouring the internet for that one perfect outfit, being a Fangirl is one of my favourite things in the world. It’s taught me that we can change the world and that we as fans should be taken more seriously because we are changing the industry.
