Coldplay has announced that they will donate 10% of their earnings from their 2025 UK tour dates in London and Hull to the Music Venue Trust (MVT), a charity dedicated to supporting grassroots music venues across the UK.

The band’s initiative aims to aid smaller venues, many of which are facing financial struggles and potential closures.

Earlier this year, the UK Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sports committee heard testimonies from promoters and industry representatives about the crisis facing smaller venues. Many advocated for a £1 levy on arena concert tickets to be redistributed to these struggling grassroots spaces. In 2023, 125 small venues across the UK were forced to shut down, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Mark Davyd, CEO of the Music Venue Trust, praised Coldplay’s commitment to supporting grass roots venues, saying: “Coldplay are the perfect example of a UK band who came through the grassroots circuit on their way to worldwide, stadium-filling success. It’s fantastic to see them giving back to the grassroots music venues that supported them… Their support really will stop venues closing, make tours happen, and bring the joy of live music to thousands.”

Davyd has long lobbied for a French-style system where a centralised fund, supported by a levy on ticket sales at major venues, could be accessed by grassroots promoters and venues. Other proposals to address the financial strain on smaller venues have included reducing the 20% VAT on concert tickets, which is higher in the UK than in countries like France and Germany.

In addition to their support for grassroots venues, Coldplay’s London dates will focus on sustainability. Their Wembley Stadium shows pledge to be the first powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and kinetic energy generated by fans. The band has also surpassed their goal of reducing emissions by 50% from their previous tour, reaching a 59% reduction, certified by MIT’s Environmental Solutions Initiative.

Coldplay’s tenth album, Moon Music, set for release on October 4, continues their environmental efforts. The LPs will be made from recycled plastic bottles, with a significant reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional vinyl.

The band will perform at Hull’s Craven Park Stadium on August 18 and 19, 2025, and at Wembley Stadium on August 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, and 31. Tickets go on sale on September 27.
