More Than Music: What Happens When Artists Give Back to the Fans Who Lift Them?

When Selin Pera was invited down to a celebration of JADE’s THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY! THE ENCORE release, it taught her something vital about fan engagement.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being a fangirl. It’s a word often dismissed or misunderstood, yet it carries real passion for those who live it. To be a fangirl is to find belonging in a community that understands you in a way few others can. It’s a safe space carved out in the corners of the internet and in crowded group chats, where passion is shared loudly and unapologetically. Here, excitement isn’t something to be embarrassed by; it’s understood and respected.

Music connects with people in different ways. For some, it’s the sound or rhythm, for others it’s the lyricism, and often it’s the artistry, the visuals, performances and stories an artist chooses to tell.

Music fuels devotion and creativity, and fangirls are often the ones carrying that fire the furthest. They show up, stream endlessly, queue for hours and spend their own money to support the artists they love. Yet beneath that dedication, there’s often a quiet question: how important are fans to the artists themselves? Moments of genuine acknowledgement matter so much; they remind fans that they’re seen and appreciated for their ability to love so freely.

Last Friday, I felt seen by JADE.

I was invited to an exclusive celebration of THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY! THE ENCORE, marking the release of her debut solo album’s deluxe edition.

Hidden inside a hired-out club on the busy streets of London was a room full of fans, brought together to experience something rare: an artist giving back with intention. The night felt like an exchange of love, respect and gratitude. While I can’t say too much about how the evening unfolded, it’s one I won’t forget. Listening to the music and hearing JADE speak about the making of the album, from her inspirations to her collaborators – it made the experience feel personal and exciting. It was fun, intimate and something I got to share not only with fellow fans, but with JADE herself!

When artists choose to recognise the people who help elevate them, it transforms fandom into something unforgettable. These moments go beyond the music; they create memories, affirm loyalty and strengthen the bond between artist and community. Currently, as I write this, I’m listening to the album, which now holds even more meaning to me after this experience.

In moments like these, being a fangirl isn’t just special – it’s everything, and I love every second of it.
