Lewis Capaldi Returns: A Night to Remember in Sheffield

After a two-year hiatus, Lewis Capaldi kicked off his return to the stage for two sell-out nights in Sheffield
“We’re back baby”, Lewis proudly tells the sold-out Sheffield crowd as he kicks off the first night of his arena tour after a hiatus which saw the Scottish singer take some time away to focus on his mental health.
Capaldi’s comeback to music first started in June of this year, when he took to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury for a surprise set and a debut performance of his latest single Survive. Following this was the announcement of a string of shows across the UK and Ireland which (to no surprise), sold out immediately.
Aaron Rowe kicked off the show with an incredible performance featuring just him, an acoustic guitar and his fiddle player. Despite only having three songs released (Hey Ma, Lose Lose and Talking With You), Aaron captivated the crowd with his raw, powerful vocals. Following Aaaron, was Skye Newman – a hit with the fans and a voice reminiscent of Amy Winehouse.
Opening the show with Survive, Lewis belted out the lyrics ‘I’ve still got something to give / Though it hurts sometimes / I’m gonna get up and live / Until the day that I die’. The perfect opener, showing Lewis’ strength and how hard he’s worked to get to this point – back up on stage doing what he loves.

Performing crowd favourites Grace and Forever from his debut album, the crowd sang back every word showing just how much everyone has missed him. Fans were handed LED wristbands as they headed into the arena, making the show extra special as the crowd lit up for each song.
Lewis constantly showed his appreciation to the 13,600-strong crowd, thanking them throughout the set. “Sheffield, thank you so much for still being here. This is genuinely quite overwhelming to be standing in front of this many people after all that time off. It means the fucking world”. It was clear to see how much it meant to him to be headlining a show once again.

Three songs from his sophomore album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, went down a treat with the crowd before Lewis surprised them with a new unreleased track, Almost. He shared with the audience that despite the album not coming out until 2026, plenty of new music will be released before the end of this year. Something In The Heavens – his upcoming single which has been teased over on his socials, was followed by Leave Me Lonely, Forget Me and The Pretender. Before breaking into an emotional unreleased piano ballad, The Day That I Die, Lewis admitted to the crowd: “It was written at a time when I really didn’t know if I would be around”. When the song finished, Lewis sat at the piano for a short while, with his eyes welling up and his head in his hands – an emotional and vulnerable moment for him at his first headline show in two years.
This show felt slightly different to the typical Capaldi gig. Explaining to the crowd early on that he didn’t really know what to talk about after being away from the stage for so long, the show took on a more serious approach to his previous performances. Less jokes were cracked, but the connection with the crowd was still there, and you could see how much it meant to Lewis to be back performing in front of his fans.

After an emotional performance of Before You Go, Lewis and his band closed the main set and left the stage ready for an encore. Chants of ‘Ohhh Lewis Capaldi’ filled the arena (a staple at any Lewis show) before he returned to the stage to perform How I’m Feeling Now and Hold Me While You Wait. Ending the show with the song that shot him to fame back in 2019, Someone You Loved was the pinnacle of the performance with the crowd singing back every lyric.
Vocally, Lewis was in great form throughout the night, and despite the two-year break, he was right at home in front of the Sheffield crowd. This gig wasn’t just a comeback, it was a huge milestone and achievement for Lewis to be back up on stage in front of a headline crowd, performing a full set for the first time since his hiatus. Not only were his fans extremely happy to see him return, but it was clear that Lewis and his band were just as happy to be finally on stage together again. After waiting two years for this moment, Lewis certainly didn’t disappoint. His performance made for a special night in Sheffield to mark the start of his highly anticipated return.
