New Music to Look Forward to in September
The last four months of the year are often thought of as when artists release new albums or start announcing tours all in the lead up to Christmas. And with artists seemingly producing more music than ever before and dropping singles or albums without any prior promotion, it’s good to have an idea of what is up and coming for the following month.
Check out the list below to see some of our highlights here at That Fangirl Life.
The 1975 – The 1975 10th Anniversary Edition
Release date: September 1st
If you hadn’t heard (where have you been?!), 2023 marks ten years since The 1975’s debut self-titled album that defined a generation of teenagers. Matty Healy on stage with his curly hair and bottle of red wine, in front of the glowing white rectangle makes a statement to be heard whether it be 2013 or 2023. Not to say this is a new album as it isn’t, but there are special edition versions that can be bought and who knows what the band may have up their sleeve to celebrate the anniversary.
Stephen Sanchez – Angel Face
Release date: September 2nd
You will have heard Stephen Sanchez’s viral song Until I Found You which did the rounds on TikTok in the last year even though it was originally released in 2021. You may also have seen him onstage with Sir Elton John at his last ever show at Glastonbury (surprisingly his first glatso!) this year as he was one of Elton’s guest performances, although this did seem to surprise most as he’s not as well known as the artists that were rumoured to come out.
Until I Found You is a love song for his at-the-time girlfriend Georgia, and his other released singles all seem to be a love letter to someone, it will be interesting to see if his debut album follows in these steps or we see another side to Stephen.
Olivia Rodrigo – Guts
Release date: September 8th
The long-awaited return of the pop-punk sensation Olivia Rodrigo. After her debut album Sour hit number one in 2021, after the success of her first single Drivers License (which she broke records with), it isn’t wrong to say that the pressure is on for her long-awaited second album.
However, despite her seemingly instant success, this wasn’t without any controversy. Being accused of copying Paramore’s Misery Business in her song Good 4 u, Hayley Williams and Josh Farro were then given co-writing credits as she stated her favourite artists are an influence in the music she makes . She has also been knocked for her heartbreak anthems, “how can a girl that is only 17 years old even know what love or heartbreak is?”.
Returning to the music scene now 20 years old, she came back with vampire in July, which wasn’t too far off her angsty teen sound she delivered two years ago, and bad idea right? Released last month, it looks like we can expect Sours big sister from her second album.
If Olivia was trying to shed her innocent Disney background like Miley Cyrus, it is proving successful.
Romy – Mid Air out
Release date: September 8th
You may know Romy as being 1/3 of indie band The xx but Mid Air will be her debut solo album. When announcing the album, she said “It’s musically inspired by dance music, it’s a love letter to the queer clubs I first went to when I was growing up and people I met there and the music I heard that has made me feel more alive and less alone,” she explained.
The first single released from this album was Strong ft Fred Again.. who has seen massive success over the last year, so if that is anything to go by the album is sure to be a hit on the dance scene. It will also see feature from Jamie xx, who of course is a fellow band mate and has his own solo career and success.
Romy has played the likes of Coachella, Glastonbury and All Points East already this year and is bound to return with her debut album.
Busted – Greatest Hits 2.0
Release date: September 15th
You read that right! The 2000s hit pop-rock band is back for 20 years of Busted, and with that comes their Greatest Hits 2.0 album. You can expect re-recordings of their songs that featured on the first two albums and remaking of photos from the original shoots for these albums, not only that but these re-recordings will feature some of the band’s favourite artists. They have already released the likes of Year 3000 ft Jonas Brothers (who covered this song in 2007) and Meet You There 2.0 ft Neck Deep, and some of the other features to come will see the likes of You Me At Six, James Arthur and of course McFly. You know what to expect, except their voices have matured (and so have we!), and not only that, but you can catch them on tour this month and next if you want to relive your childhood dreams and see Charlie, James and Matt back in action.
Demi Lovato – Revamped
Release date: September 15th
In the era of re-recording songs, Demi Lovato’s next album is ten previous songs but as a rock version. You can expect to hear favourites such as Skyscraper, Confident and Don’t Forget amongst others.
After going separate ways from manager Scooter Braun in August, it doesn’t seem too much of a surprise for re-recording songs, if you know what we mean…
Her last album Holy Fvck already introduced us to what we can expect from her new path in to rock music and with features such as Slash and The Maine, paired with Demi’s matured vocals, it will be worth a listen even if you aren’t previously a fan.
Ed Sheeran – Autumn Variations
Release date: September 29th
Releasing his first album on his own record company, Gingerbread Man Records, Autumn Variations will be his seventh album, and will actually be his second album this year following Subtract which came out in May.
This album will feature 14 songs as he made the announcement and said “My dad and brother told me about a composer called Elgar, who composed Enigma Variations, where each of the 14 compositions were about a different one of his friends. This is what inspired me to make this album”. Ed has said this album is reflecting on all the changes that seem to come with Autumn every year, including new love or heartbreak. It has been quickly claimed by fans that the album will have a similar feel to Ed’s debut album Plus, with the autumnal cosy feeling.
Drake – For All The Dogs
Release date: Speculated to be September
Now if you are a Drake fan you will already know that he doesn’t like to do things like everyone else. Having released an album in 2015 with no prior announcement and at one point it felt as if he was dropping new singles every week, he announced the title of his eighth album For All The Dogs via a QR code in June that was helping promote his poetry book. A statement would be shown saying “I made an album to go with the book… they say they miss the old Drake, girl don’t tempt me. For all the dogs”. The cover art is drawn by his son Adonis Graham and is confirmed by Drake himself to have features from Nicki Minaj and Bad Bunny.
It was announced by Amazon Music that the album would be released on August 25th, but for unknown reasons it wasn’t, this has left fans speculating it will most likely be a September release. So watch this space.
