With the temperatures dropping lower and lower every day, there is no better time to cuddle up and put on cosy films. And there is no need to scroll for hours to find something worth watching, because we have compiled the perfect list of music movies just waiting to be added to your Letterboxd list. Whether it is a familiar favourite or a new find, here is a list of must-see music films to watch this winter.
Almost Famous
Almost Famous is the definition of a comfort movie. It is a story of an outsider trying to get a glimpse into the lifestyle of the rich and the famous. It follows a 15-year-old music journalist who leaves home to join rockstars on the road. Although the characters are fictional, it is said to be semi-biographical of the director, Cameron Crowe.
Miss Americana
While we all go through withdrawal from The Eras Tour, there is nothing better to get your Taylor Swift fix than from Miss Americana herself. This documentary gives an inside look into Taylor’s mind and covers everything from politics to songwriting to mental health. And who does not get the chills watching her and Jack Antonoff sing Getaway Car for the first time?
Love and Mercy
If you want something to pull at your heart strings, look no further than Love and Mercy. The film is a biopic of Brian Wilson aka the leading man to The Beach Boys. It follows his life story by focusing on his relationships with his family, abusive doctors, and bandmates. It takes you through his journey from being overmedicated to meeting his future wife.
Priscilla
If you are into biopics, Priscilla is a must see. It offers a new look at Elvis Presley’s glamorous lifestyle and how his fame spilled into his personal life. The Presley family had mixed reviews regarding the film. The singer’s daughter, Lisa Marie, called it “vengeful and contemptuous.” However, Priscillia Presley herself approved of Sophia Coppola’s vision of the film and praised the portrayal of her marriage to Elvis.
Whiplash
If you cannot take my word for Whiplash being worthy of your next watch, maybe the Academy Awards’ opinion can sway you. The film took home 3 Oscars in 2014. It tells the story of a drummer’s struggle to balance the intense demands of a professional career. It is intense, captivating, and stars Miles Teller. What more could you want?
