This time of year is always full of award shows across film, theatre, and music. I have always loved these – seeing what everyone will be wearing, who will be performing, and what drama will go on. Also every year we see the power that these awards shows have to take an artist from a small following to becoming huge stars, all in one night. A major example of this is Sam Fender who went from winning rising star at the Brit Awards in 2019 to winning a Brit and two NME awards in 2022. So far this year we have had the Brit Awards and the NME awards – here is a list of some of the indie acts who have be celebrated at these!
Although Little Simz has been making music for over 10 years, her album “Sometimes I might be an introvert” has seen her put quite literally on centre stage this year, winning the prestigious best new artist brit award and nominated for many more.
I was so happy to see Wolf Alice get recognition at the award shows this year. They picked up the best british group at the Brit awards, being one of only a few bands to include female members winning this award (Little mix were the first girl group to win this award last year in its 40+ year history)
Wet Leg are relatively new to the music scene, having only released music onto streaming services last year. Despite this, these received a lot of love at this years NME awards with 4 nominations. Definitely a band to watch in the coming years – I expect we will be hearing their name a lot more!
Joy Crookes has be recognised as one of the most exciting new faces in the UK music scene, and this was reflected by her nominations at this year’s brit awards. Although she missed out to Little Simz this year, I would not be surprised to see her picking up awards in the future.
An absolute favourite of mine, I was very happy to see Holly pick up the prestigious British Rising Star award at this years Brits, following in the footsteps of huge stars like Adele, Ellie, Goulding, James bay, Tom Odell, and more recently Griff.
This season is far from over, with notably the 64th Grammys still to take place in April. These nominations as expected feature lots of US based acts and I am particularly excited to see who will walk away with the Best Alternative Music Album award which is a strong female category this year featuring amazing albums from Japanese Breakfast, Arlo Parks, and St. Vincent. Another exciting category is best new artist with some pop acts like Olivia Rodrigo, and Finneas competing against indie acts like Japenese Breakfast, Arlo Parks, and Arooj Aftab.
