We all have our favourite pop obsessions. From boy-bands to pop queens like Beyonce and Taylor Swift – but sometimes their past music may not be enough, and you want some new music to listen to. Here I am playing matchmaker with your favourite pop obsessions and some smaller indie acts that will hopefully give you the same feeling you got when you discovered your favourites. Make sure to let us know if you discover anyone new here!
Trying to find artists similar to Taylor Swift is quite literally impossible, as no artist can match her back catalogue, from country to pop to the newest folklore/evermore era. However, I think Taylor fans will appreciate fellow Nashville resident Soccer Mommy. Although musically not too similar to Taylor, I think you will love the song writing and the lyrics. She definitely fits into the “sad girl” genre with notable songs like ‘Bloodstream’, ‘Rom com 2004’, and my favourite ‘Switzerland’.
If you love Lorde, especially the first two albums, Maude Latour is definitely someone you will enjoy. Not only are their voices similar, but Maude writes similar dark yet beautiful lyrics, over the most fun tracks. Great tracks to check out first include ‘Furniture’, and ‘Block your Number’.
If you are a 1975 fan, then you have likely heard of Beabadobee with her opening for the band in 2019. She is also signed to their record label, and they have writing credits on some of her songs. But if you haven’t heard of her, you will definitely recognise her song ‘Death bed’ which was viral on TikTok right at the start of the pandemic (try listening to it, it will take you right back to May 2020!). The best songs to start with for Beabadobee is ‘Last Day of Earth’ which sounds it’s been taken right out of a 1975 album. In fact, the whole ‘Our Extended Play’ EP is a great place to start.
Harry is famously inspired by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Queen, and Joni Mitchell, and these acts have inspired 10000s of other musicians over the years. However, to match an indie artist to the sound of Harry is difficult – so instead I am suggesting Alfie Templeman for the feeling the music gives you. Songs like ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’ and ‘Everybody’s gonna love someone’ will give you ‘Golden’, ‘Adore you’, and ‘Watermelon sugar’ vibes, making you wish for summer.
I couldn’t make these suggestions without sneaking in KAWALA somewhere. They are one of my favourite bands and are so underrated. Like Niall, they create guitar based music and songs that will make you want to go on a long drive – with lovely melodies and feel good lyrics. Songs like ‘Do it like you do’ may make you think of Niall songs like ‘Black and white’ and ‘Moonlight’ will give you ‘This town’ vibes. Their first EP “Counting the miles” is a good introduction, and their debut album is coming out this month so it’s a great time to become a fan.
Ariana creates amazing pop songs with soulful and meaningful lyrics and if you love this, I think you will love BEKA. Musically a slightly different vibe, but with songs like ‘I’ll be there’, and ‘My one’ the lyrics and the soul of the song will make you an instant fan.
I hope this gives you some new musical inspiration and something to listen to whilst waiting for your favourites to release new music (cough, Harry Styles, cough). I’m sure I will be back with more matchmaking soon where you can discover a new obsession.
