Whether you’re spending this v-day alone, snuggled up on the sofa romanticising what life could be (no judgement here, sounds like an ideal plan), spending the day with gal pals, or if you’re planning on watching a film with your one-true-love (your spouse or pet, you decide), we’ve compiled a handful of films to watch to get you feeling in the mood for lurrrrve.
A classic. The absolute best of the best. This film is so iconic and feel good, and worth watching purely just to witness young Heath Ledger, and young Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Not only is this nineties hit just a great rom-com, but the soundtrack is elite and one you can listen to on repeat. Topping off the 100 mins of love, is the fashion that are witnessed in the film. Main characters Kat and Bianca Stratford slay some high class 90s looks; crop tops, cute cardigans, pastel hues, the 90s finest.
An abba-solute classic (see what I did there). This one has to be on the list, mainly because the last day to watch it on Netflix is 15th Feb, so get it while it’s hot. Although the hardcore Mamma Mia fans will obviously own a copy on DVD, if people still watch those anymore. Set on a remote Greek island, Mamma Mia see’s Meryl Streep in all her glory, portray the mother-of-the-bride, who is on the hunt to find out her daughter’s birth father as the three potential suspects have been invited along to said wedding – all whilst the cast perform pretty much the entirety of Abba’s discography scene after scene. What a palaver you may think, but fear not when the three hunks in question are Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgard. And to top it all off, the film basically consists of Meryl Streep and in-film-daughter Amanda Seyfried strutting around Greece in dungarees; a wardrobe that I wish I could dive into on a daily basis.
This film is an emotional one, so pack the tissues if you’re feeling slightly fragile. This film is one of my favourites, it’s just a classic British rom-com that tugs on the heartstrings. A selection of relationships are portrayed within the film, whether it be the story of Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mary (Rachel McAdams), or Tim and his sister Kit Kat (Lydia Wilson), or his father (Bill Nighy). The plot is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with some great highs, but some very sad lows, but isn’t that what makes a great film? One of my favourite ever scenes is from this film, the wedding scene; which in reality would be my absolute nightmare, but it encapsulates British weather to a tee.
