After ten amazing years, one member leaving, three mixer births and creating empowering music, Little Mix’s new album has arrived.
This album is like no other. Instead, this album behaves like a time capsule, going through the wonderful singles that Little Mix has created, starting with the one and only Wings. Luckily for many of us Mixers, Leigh Anne, Jade and Perrie have produced a few new songs for us. It is mind-blowing to think that it has been ten years, and in just under a month, it will be ten years since they won the X-Factor. Where has the time gone? Little Mix has helped many of us to grow into the people that we are now. And in a way, this album is a way for them to show their love for us once again.
Hearing Wings and DNA once again brings back many memories to Little Mix’s first album. Nine years ago, when this album came out, it was the first time for us Mixers to understand what tone and style they wanted their music to convey. And from the get-go, Little Mix told the world that they wanted to empower their listeners. Almost a decade later, DNA and its catalogue still manage to do just that!
The album then swiftly moves to a couple of songs from their second album, which came out in 2013. Listening to Move once again reminds many of us how groovy this song is. The second this song starts, all you want to do are the dance moves that they performed in the music video. And then there is Salute, which is one of the most empowering Little Mix’s songs. The song represented all the women in the world and stated that we are powerful when coming together.
But we can tell there is a slight difference between this album and their first. Little Mix was still trying to find their places, and even after a successful first album, they needed to make sure their second one had the same reaction. And luckily for us, it did.
Black Magic was the song that made Little Mix grow their fanbase; it was the song they performed during their first performance on the Brits award. And it is the song that helped branch themselves to America even more. Although, all of us Mixers hope that Little Mix will grow even more in America as they deserve that.
Little Mix has always been there for their LGBTQ+ fans, and the song Secret Love Song can be seen as a message for the people who do not identify as straight, especially to those who are still not living their true selves. This slow ballad tells us how difficult it can be for many people, and hearing this song in their Between Us album reminds us how much Little Mix have done for their LGBTQ+ fans.
And of course, we have Hair, a fun-loving song that is perfect to listen to after a break-up.
Many of us here are hardcore Little Mix fans, but if you are not, the songs that were first introduced in this album, such as Shout out to my ex, Touch, No more sad songs, and Power, are most likely the songs non-hardcore fans would choose when thinking about Little Mix.
The songs from Glory Days switched the flip for Little Mix, this album felt different, and it seemed that they had finally found who they were. They had many anthems for people who had gone through a break-up, and being a powerful woman.
Woman Like Me is a song that spoke to many Mixers. In our eyes, we see Little Mix as perfect, but this song allowed us to relate to them as they too have regrets, just like many of us. Choosing this song to showcase this era from the past ten years is perfect. The song is about how women are normally seen as one thing, but Little Mix is preaching that it is fine to not be the ‘perfect’ traditional woman, and you should be the woman you like to be.
The last album with Jesy will always be close to many of our Mixers hearts. Choosing Break Up Song to remind us about this album that came out last year is ideal, as it goes with the theme of them breaking up with a member but being alright with it to carry on with their new era.
And we can see that move between eras through the songs Sweet Melody and Confetti. The last music video with Jesy and the first music video without Jesy.
During their journey of finding their voice as a three, Little Mix has joined other musicians to produce new music. One is Heartbreak Anthem, a song that can be seen as a positive break-up song with their fourth member. And the other song is Kiss MY (Uh Oh) by Anne-Marie.
And, of course, no album is complete with new songs.
Many of us fans might have gone through life and feel that we have to say yes. Having a new bop, with a music video that has just come out, where Little Mix is preaching to say, no, is empowering. This song is one for fans to dance to but for them to remember the words when they too want to say no.
This song feels like it’s a way for Little Mix to say thank you to all of their fans. Many fans feel like this song might be a way for them to say goodbye, but as they have mentioned many times, they are not thinking of breaking up and having anything come between them. But it is crucial for fans to remember that two members are mothers, and means they might need a little break.
The writing for this song is cleverly done, having links with their past songs such as Wings, Sweet Melody, Power, and Bounce Back.
The music from this song slips into your bones, and all you want to do is dance when listening to Little Mix sing, once again, a stunning song. An empowering song about giving yourself the love that you deserve and focusing on yourself.
Another fantastic break-up song, one that many Mixers can relate to, as many of us might have experienced a relationship where we only see our partner’s true colours after the break-up. So, if you are a Mixer who has just experienced a break-up, this is the newest break-up anthem for you.
Another song that might speak to many Mixers is Trash; this song has a nice balance between a slow and fast tempo. When Little Mix sings the verse, it is nice and slow as if they are telling a story, and then when it comes to the chorus, the tempo speeds up as if all your thoughts are coming together and you know what to do.
This album allows us to listen to Little Mix’s history, and these songs truly show us how much they have grown. Many of their songs are about loving ourselves and knowing it is fine to leave your partner if they are not the right one.
It is truly inspiring to see that they have produced these new songs and music videos whilst two-thirds of them were pregnant.
From the start of their journey, Little Mix has made sure that their songs empower their fans. The Between Us album not only empowers us, but it shows us all how much we and Little Mix have grown.
Their transition from a four-piece to a three-piece is clearly seen in this album, and their harmonies are still stunning.
I am looking forward to seeing what else the Little Mix ladies do in the future, are you?
