Here at TFL HQ, we’ve decided to take one for the team and sit through all 8 of Harry Styles‘ music videos and rank them because we know how tough it is to make that decision as a fan. So from best to worst here are our favourites.
Coming at top of the list is of course Adore You. From the teasers that were placed online through the fictional island of Eroda, this was something we hadn’t seen from Harry as of yet with his music videos. With the extended version of the music video being at nearly 8 minutes long; we’re taken on a journey of a boy, a fish and how they are both set free in different ways. Directed by Dave Meyers; who has created videos from the likes of Britney Spears, Ariana Grande & Ed Sheeran (to name a few) as well as amazing styling by Harry Lambert and a cameo by singer Rosalie as the narrator; it’s a video unlike any of Styles’ others. Favourite moment has to be Harry checking if the coffee pot is cool before putting the fish into it.
If you close your eyes it’s almost like you are actually in the Alamfi Coast with Harry; running through the streets, driving a convertible and taking a dip in the ocean. All whilst wearing your yellow rain hat and lace gloves of course. It perfectly encapsulates a ‘golden’ summer, although the release in October 2020 just made us miss the summer gone. Favourite moment we mean it has to be the swimming scenes for us; although the little dancing backwards walk along the coast front does come a close second.
A shocker that this is not at the top of our favourites of Harry Styles Music Videos. The styling, the inclusivity of the extras and let’s not even mention the caressing of that watermelon. Watermelon Sugar definitely gets you feeling hot, hot, hot. Released during the height of the pandemic in May 2020, the video was dedicated to touching (something that was lacking across the globe at that moment thanks to lockdowns and social distancing). With nods to Paul McCartney and Jack Nicholson within some shots; as well as the vintage style of filming sprinkled throughout, it’s like stepping back straight into the 70s. The song of summer 2020 with a video to match the vibe. Favourite moment; how could it not be Harry and the watermelon having a moment at the start?
The start of Harry Styles solo career saw him flying more than 1,550 feet over the Isle of Skye in Scotland. What makes this even more impressive is that there’s no green screen or CGI used for any of the video and for fans who watched The Behind The Album documentary will remember Styles’ delight at being dangled from a helicopter that high. With the poignant meaning behind the song of a mother dying during childbirth and telling her child to go on and live life; this video captures this feeling perfectly. Our favourite moment definitely the walking on water; cause who else wants to try that?
Do You Know Who You Are? Well thanks for asking Harry, we’re certain we’re actually passed out on the floor from this video. Lights Up marked the start of the Fine Line era; with a teaser website dropped giving fans uplifting messages such as ‘You Are Extra’, ‘You Are Important’ the fandom was on the edge of their seats waiting to see what was about to drop. Unlike other singles of Styles’, the video and single release happened simultaneously and the fandom lost their cool (I was actually dead asleep when this all dropped and remember waking up like what the hell has he done now as I saw the flurry of notifications). The video itself has a topless Harry dancing amongst a sweaty crowd of people, riding a motorcycle backwards as well as some shots that clearly have Harry looking deep within himself to find out who he really is. Favourite moment would have to be the cheeky tongue out and sweaty dancing for us.
Another one of Harry Styles’ music videos directed by Dave Meyers. Whilst this is a beautifully shot video with such a deep meaning, we just feel like the others are just 0.01% better. The video itself was awarded an Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design award; which was the first time a music video has ever been given this accolade. We also see Harry share his underwater skills for another time since his film debut in Dunkirk; oh and we haven’t even touched on the piano playing or Harry’s amazing blouse. Favourite moment; or should we say most heartbreaking? Definitely when Harry gets fully submerged in the water whilst hitting that note.
Did we ever think we’d get to see Harry Styles performing a full choreographed dance routine; especially with Pheobe Waller-Bridge? Can’t say we did. Whilst we love the feel-good vibes for this video we just think it is missing just that little something; it could be that for us it just didn’t match up to the vision we had of this song from just listening to the album. Favourite moment; 100% the little shoulder shimmies and that sparkly jacket!
If someone can please explain why we’re having a food fight with children and a puppy in this music video for a song about a one night stand that would be great. Whilst we can’t deny this video has super cute vibes; we hardly get any screen time of Harry, which is what we’re all here for really. Favourite moment; Harry holding the puppy of course! Two cuties together.
