Over the course of 2021, Disney+ and Marvel Studios have released three TV shows to introduce to the Marvel Cinematic Universes’ Phase 4. Since the last Marvel release, Avengers Endgame, and the global pandemic that put all Marvel productions on hold, fans have been anticipating all this newfound content. Disney+ first released WandaVision in early 2021, setting off a major Marvel craze online. Since then, in March the Falcon and the Winter Soldier was released in which Loki followed in June.
Tom Hiddleston who plays Loki allegedly never thought he would play Loki again. But after the “finale” of the MCU’s Phase 3, many fans began to wonder what happened to Loki when he picked up the tesseract in Endgame? His storyline left incomplete, Marvel Studios decided to give Loki one last shot. The show’s first season on Disney+ finished just a few weeks ago on July 14. And if you’re missing the Tom Hiddleston content like I am, here are five fun facts about the show you maybe didn’t know.
In episode two when Sylvie played by Sophia De Martino, and Loki played by Tom Hiddleston sneak on this train in hopes of finding a way off a doomed planet, fans learn that Loki is bi-sexual, making Loki Marvel’s first LGBTQ+ character. Not only is his sexuality addressed though, during the main credits, for a brief second, but you can also see Loki’s TVA file. On the file under “Sex,” it is labeled as “Fluid”. We love a bisexual, gender fluid, anti-hero! About time Marvel.
One of the most interesting things to me is that Michael is also the screenwriter for Rick and Morty. Who would have guessed? But once you know that, it makes sense. Michael was heavily inspired by his work with Rick and Morty and used comedy as much as he could in Loki. He once mentioned he was worried it involved too much comedy. Not to mention that Michael Waldron has since added the highly anticipated Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness to his portfolio. He also graduated from the University of Georgia which also happens to be my alma mater. Michael if you see this, go dawgs!
Owen Wilson who plays Mobius both have mentioned that to understand Loki better, Tom Hiddlestone gave them “Loki Lectures”. Mobius, being the TVA agent who has studied the character for many, many years, is considered a Loki expert. Tom walked him through the entirety of the Marvel Universe. Director, Kate Herron, also mentions that she attended “Loki School” to get a firmer grasp on Loki and his identity. She described that Tom discussed all aspects of Loki, from the character himself to how he felt emotionally through filming.
Wunmi Mosaku (Ravonna, the Judge/TVA-crazy-lady), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Hunter B-15, the one who wants to rebel) went to school with Tom Hiddlestone at RADA in London. Wunmi Mosaku mentions she’s known Tom and Gugu since she was 18. She also mentions while joining the MCU is a scary, thrilling journey, she always felt better knowing she could “walk into a room and have friends there”. Talk about a small world.
Unlike other Disney+ and Marvel success shows prior, Loki is planned to have multiple seasons. It is possible it will have up to three seasons. Allegedly, the first season was supposed to have more than six episodes and not continue to two seasons. But due to the global pandemic and production delays, Marvel Studios has switched around the timeline for Loki’s show. Dare I say, the sacred timeline?
