As fans, we love to see our idols flourish in both their careers and their personal lives. Seeing those celebrities that we adore so much, go through their own huge milestones in their lives, such as wedding engagements, marriages and babies can be a special moment to celebrate for us fans too, on behalf of our idols.
For me, I have always loved, idolised and generally been a fangirl of Little Mix, Ariana Grande, and Zoe Sugg. They have all individually been a great comfort to me in trying times and have brought me so much joy over the years, as well being the reasons behind me finding a supportive community within the fandoms. I have loved them all since their beginnings in their careers and watched them grow up and hit massive professional achievements.
But I have also looked up to them from a personal perspective. Due to them all being only a few years older than myself, I have viewed them as inspiring role models and grown with them over the years. Now that they have achieved absolute greatness within their individual careers, they are now focusing on achieving their personal goals, such as settling down and starting a family.
Leigh-Anne Pinnock of Little Mix is expecting her first child with footballer fiancé Andre Gray. Coincidentally, Perrie Edwards of Little Mix is also expecting her first child with footballer boyfriend Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Zoe Sugg is also starting a family with YouTuber boyfriend Alfie Deyes, and Ariana Grande has recently tied the knot with her beau Dalton Gomez.
Watching our idols have these huge life-changing moments, can spark various reactions and emotions from the fans. There are two completely normal yet common reactions that fans tend to have.
First of all, there is excitement on behalf of our idol and the initial shock. For me, I found out about all of the news mentioned above via social media (as I believe most of us did), and internally screamed with excitement! I instantly shared their individual posts and was genuinely so happy for them.
Then the second emotion, the selfish worry. It is completely normal for fans to suddenly worry and feel dread at what this could mean for the future of our idols’ careers. Thoughts raced through my head, is this the end of Little Mix once Leigh-Anne and Perrie give birth? Will Zoe have the energy to pick up her vlogging camera when she has a newborn to look after? Will Ariana want to focus on starting a family and stop releasing albums?
This worry can sometimes overtake the excitement, which is sad but again, very common. The celebrities sometimes reassure the fans that they will continue. Little Mix assured fans that the upcoming Confetti tour will go ahead, despite both babies being born by then. In Zoe Sugg’s case, she hasn’t commented on the future of her YouTube channel, but many have argued that having a baby could actually be beneficial to her vlogging content, as documenting raising a baby is a well-loved topic. Zoe has already shared details of her pregnancy online with her viewers. In regard to Ariana, fans are certain her new happiness could inspire her to write new loved-up songs.
At the end of the day though, what is most important is respecting those we love so much and knowing what the boundaries are in regard to their personal lives. I think when it comes to moments like these, as hard as it may be, we need to take ourselves out of the equation. True fans want their idols’ happiness to come first.
